Summer Internship with North Carolina Biotechnology Center
Baiyok Piyachotisukit, Daytime MBA 2026
This summer, I worked as a Finance Intern at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech), a nonprofit supporting North Carolina’s life sciences ecosystem through funding and innovation programs. My role focused on strengthening the Center’s financial program evaluation and management capabilities.
I conducted data-driven analysis of a $50M+ loan portfolio, improving profitability insights and repayment forecasting. This enhanced transaction monitoring and payment reconciliation accuracy, giving the finance and loan teams sharper visibility into cash flows and risks. I also mapped and assessed three data systems to identify integration gaps, informing a strategy for streamlined reporting and greater efficiency in tracking financial and impact data.
In addition, I collaborated with the Conference Center team to design a performance metric and pricing model that incorporated customer satisfaction, utilization, cost structures, and revenue streams. To ensure continuity, I built models, templates, and documentation enabling staff to replicate and adapt my analyses beyond my internship.
This experience showed me that finance extends beyond measurement as it shapes strategy and unlock mission-driven impact. The skills I developed at NCBiotech, particularly in data-driven analysis, financial modeling, and strategic thinking will be critical as I continue to pursue opportunities at the intersection of finance and innovation. I plan to apply these tools to ensure resources are aligned with outcomes that improve lives, while also advancing inclusive financial solutions that broaden access to opportunity. This internship reinforced my commitment to becoming a leader of consequence who applies business acumen to generate positive societal outcomes, reflecting Team Fuqua’s values of inclusive growth and thoughtful, data-driven impact.
This internship was supported by the Summer Internship Fund, which enables first-year Duke MBA students to learn about the rewards and challenges of using business to drive positive impact without making a significant financial sacrifice. The program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise. Funds are raised through student fundraising and from donors who believe in the mission of the program. If you would like to contribute, you can donate online using your credit card.
