Summer Internship with Latino Community Credit Union
Francisca Lagos, Daytime MBA 2026
This summer, I interned with the Latino Community Credit Union (LCCU) as a Card Services Intern, where I focused on supporting the growth of its developing cards business. My responsibilities included identifying patterns and trends in card operations, collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Fraud, Risk, and the Contact Center, and assisting in process improvements to enhance efficiency and member communication.
Drawing on the Payments and Cards knowledge I gained at Mastercard and the business skills I am developing through my MBA at Duke, I was able to provide insights that informed decisions on improving card operations and member experiences. I analyzed data to highlight operational trends, identified opportunities to reduce processing time, and supported initiatives to strengthen fraud prevention and risk management. Beyond the technical work, I had the opportunity to present my findings to the C-suite, engaging in business conversations that broadened my perspective on leadership and strategy in a nonprofit financial institution.
This internship was especially meaningful because LCCU serves a community I am deeply connected to, and it reinforced for me the power of financial services to drive inclusion and opportunity. The experience not only sharpened my analytical and collaborative skills but also deepened my appreciation for mission-driven work.
Going forward, I plan to leverage what I learned at LCCU to continue building a career at the intersection of financial services and social impact, using my skills to develop innovative solutions that expand access, improve member experiences, and create lasting value for communities.
This internship was supported by the Summer Internship Fund, which enables first-year Duke MBA students to learn about the rewards and challenges of using business to drive positive impact without making a significant financial sacrifice. The program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise. Funds are raised through student fundraising and from donors who believe in the mission of the program. If you would like to contribute, you can donate online using your credit card.
